AfricaIn Africa bicycles are being used, but for those parts of the population really interested in cycling, they are too expensive to be affordable. Furthermore, people fear the traffic on bicycle. This causes that both bicycle ownership and bicycle use by people who want to use a bicycle are rather low. The bicycles being used are often used for business purposes. The challenge is threefold: bicycles should be made affordable to the people, the road environment should enable their safe and comfortable use, and the bicycle should not be regarded as something for the poor. A successful introduction of cycling would decrease the levels of captive walking.
