Project support from I-CE to Sustran Lac May 2008 - January 2009
Sustran LAC's activities are coordinated by Ciudad Viva, an organisation set up in Santiago, the Chilean capital, in the nineteen nineties, in order to get more attention and space for cyclists and pedestrians. The fist step in the creation of the network has been the listing of all existing groups in Latin America interested in bicycle traffic. Secondly, a database has been set up with all available Spanish and Portuguese documents and other resources. A "mission statement" has also been issued with a short description of Sustran LAC's objectives.

ImageCollected documents and information are made available via the website www.sustranlac.org and an E-Newsletter is published every two months to inform about latest developments in the field of cycling. Special attention is given to women cyclists.

Another important objective of the network is to publisize local initiatives useful to other locations. For example,  teaching people to ride a bike within and beyond the school system in Lima and Sao Paulo, are projects having resulted in the gathering of a host of precious information usable in many other cities. Another example is Bicicultura, an annual bicycle festival organized in Santiago. The idea has been taken up by cyclist organizations in Mexico and Brazil. The Brazilian edition of Bicicultura is linked up with a bicycle congress and the first anniversary of the Uniao de Ciclistas do Brasil, the national cyclist federation of Brazil.
