CSO Ciclópolis

CiclopolisCiclópolis is a not-for-profit organisation that was founded in 2007 in order to promote the use of the bicycle as sustainable form of transportation and recreation in Ecuadorian cities. Moreover, it works to contribute to and intervene in the generation, development and recuperation of public spaces as producers of new meanings and citizenship.

Ciclópolis believes in the collective construction of urban space. In the new city we are citizens, urban beings with new values based on respect, solidarity and coexistence. A new state of the city: more community-based, habitable and enjoyable, with better opportunities, with better access to services and therefore a safer city.

Therefore, to recuperate and transform public space is also a citizen challenge. To give new meanings to public space is to recreate it, innovate it and recreate the significance of it. The bicycle is one of the best tools we can use to change this space that we feel isn´t ours, that´s exclusive and even hostile. We desire to appropriate a space that is less violent, more democratic, friendly and integrative, inviting the encounter and communication between citizens.

Gender seminar, 3 & 4 September 2008
On the 3rd and 4th of September 2008, Ciclópolis organised a seminar on gender and cycling. During this seminar presentations were held on perceptions of gender violence and unsafe public space in Quito (Andreína Torres), Sustainable mobility with a gender perspective (Ma. Fernanda Porras), civic participation with a gender perspective (Andrea Corinez) and the strategical vision on gender and mobility in the Dutch context (Angela van der Kloof). This created a base for a public debate on needs and opportunities for gender inclusive city planning.

Bicycle lessons for women in Quito (Project support of I-CE to Ciclópolis May 2008 - December 2008)

Though there are not yet many cyclists in Quito, the Ecuadorian capital, amongst which hardly any women, or no women at all..., Ciclopolis tries to change this situation and foster a cycle culture in Ecuador. One of the Ciclopolis organization's objectives is to induce women through specific bicycle lessons - with I-C's support - to discover the bike as an environment-friendly, healthy and cheap means of transportation.

Bicycle ambassadors from Quito visit the Netherlands (Project support of I-CE to Ciclópolis September 2007)

In order to meet with the Dutch bike culture, a group of thirteen "bicycle ambassadors" from Ecuador visited the Netherlands during two weeks at the end of 2007. Indeed, the Dutch are well known worldwide for their bicycle culture: massive bicycle use - according to foreign standards - independently from age, gender and social status and for their specific know-how in the design of bicycle facilities. I-CE built the program for this study tour and accompanied the group during its visit.
